Anke Brehm, First Place winner in our autumn 2019 photo contest “Contrasts,” explains how she became interested in photography and what fascinates her about it.

When did you start your photography?

My husband gave me a camera for a special birthday, and from that day on I was hooked! I read everything I could about photography and kept taking pictures and playing with all the settings and features on the camera. I’d read some more, take more pictures and just kept at it.

Is photography your hobby or your profession?

It’s my hobby.

How and where was the image taken that you entered into the competition? Is there a story behind it?

The picture was taken in Spain, at the beach where I have taken my camera countless times before. In the distant horizon I saw the sailboats, the blue sky with some clouds, and the relatively calm sea. I liked the conditions I saw, so I took some photos. When I got home, I edited the image, intensifying the colors and using a motion blur to indicate wind movement. I exposed the sailboats using a layer mask.

Who and/or what inspires you most?

Most inspiring to me are natural motifs such as the sea, a forest – trees and branches can stimulate the imagination. Sound can inspire me too, whether it’s music or crashing waves.

What’s your photographic focus?

Nature, especially in its detail. I find shapes and structures fascinating, but the creativity available in digital imaging is something I love, too. I get excited about trying out new creative approaches to imagery.

What’s your next photo project or challenge?

Currently I’m planning a photo exhibition for spring 2020.

Do you include color management in your photographic workflow?

Yes. I’d like to spend more time with it since colors are an important aspect of my work. My first experience with color management with Spyder dates back years ago.

What do you do with your photos? Do you print them, post them on your social media accounts or your website or do they simply stay on your hard drive?

Some pictures are used to create photo books or gallery prints.
Most pictures actually stay on the hard drive or can be found on the internet.

What’s your photographic goal? What do you dream of?

I would like to create a book of Calpe, Spain, but not the typical sights. I want to show my point of view, my feelings and experiences.
