Lee Jin Soo – Travel Photography

By Cynthia David

As the Korean Wave phenomenon spreads all over the world and with the steady rise of social media in Korea, blogging has become a way of life for many Koreans. As the country enjoys fast Internet connection as well as high Internet penetration, it has been easy to share games, entertainment, music, dramas and culture with the world. Blogger Lee Jin Soo started photography in 2000; by chance he started doing commercial work for apparel brands. He also started to do reviews for different camera brands and has been a professional reviewer since then.

The travel bug initially bit his wife who works as a travel writer and he eventually fell in love with traveling, he normally shoots images to go with the travel articles that his wife writes. It has been a while and they have been to more than 30 countries and 120 cities for writing and shooting. It has been a great experience to be able to travel and shoot exotic and beautiful places, food, and the people. He has recently been to Hawaii, Guam, Paris, Tokyo, Italy, New York and Croatia. Traveling gives you an appreciation of your own culture and the culture from the place that you travel to. The contrasting sceneries, the natural and man-made attractions never fail to keep me in awe. He loves to shoot against the light; the color temperature normally depends on his mood, it is often cool or warm. Using slow shutter speed also makes the image quality better.

Jin Soo uses a Canon 6D, 17-40, 24-105, 70-200 lens and edits using Photoshop and Lightroom. It is important especially for travel photographers to transport their audience to that place and time that the photo was captured. Wrong image colors ruin the experience. Therefore, having color accuracy and regular monitor calibration is very important. It is challenging to capture a particular place at the right moment; calibrating your monitor using the Spyder5 is very important to show accurate colors, as the feeling of being at that place at that time is the photographer’s goal.

“Inspiration is most important for a photographer; and some at times spend so much time to get inspiration. There are days that it seems hard to be inspired and frustration sets in, but look at what’s around you and inspiration will come.”
